See also earlier material from the Sisters' Council. Formed in 1969 with a mission to facilitate communication between the Diocese and the various orders and as a forum where sisters’ views could be heard. See Box 353.5423. The first meeting of the Calgary Diocese Sister’s Council took place on Sept 20, 1969, the temporary executive were Srs. Romanchuk, Jeannine Coulombe, Mary Magdalin, Marilyn, Elizabeth Ryan. The Sisters voted unanimously in favour of having a Diocesan Council and formed a Steering Committee to establish how best to proceed. A Constitution was created (n.d.)
The executive committee of the Sister’s Council in 1973 consisted of Srs. Rita Coulombe, Helen Hengel, Elizabeth Fitzgerald, Clotilda MacIntyre and Joan Wigbers. There was a nominating committee to find members for the executive and the Council organized a Fall program. They sought direction for their mission and lives together, issued a report on salaries of Sisters employed by the Diocese or in parishes in the Diocese and recommendations on the terms of employment (n.d.) This report was prepared at Bishop Paul’s request.

The Sisters’ Council was succeeded by the Council for Religious which had its inaugural meeting Apr 19, 1980. The membership was to include all religious eventually although it was to be ‘sisters only’ until it was firmly established.
